Disparity in quantity and quality: Options beyond IITs, NITs

The IITs followed by the BITS, IIITs and NITs dominates and shall continue to dominate the share in the most-sought-after quotient when it comes to admissions to engineering colleges. However, these coveted institutes alone obviously cannot cater or even come close to, the number of seats which is required to meet up the demand for colleges offering graduation programs, skill based quality engineering education in a country like India.  The nation's current higher education system fails to meet not just the numbers required but also the needs of students, industry and nation.

Close to 11 lacs students sit for JEE Mains while IITs and NITs combined have an intake capacity of approximately 33,000 seats. Out of which 50% seats will not be available to the 75% general students as they have been reserved for the SC/ST/OBC & PWD students who can get admissions with remarkably low JEE scores.

This inadequate number of engineering colleges with such population of aspirants for engineering courses poses an increased risk of the emergence of a growing class of unemployed graduates unable to achieve the Indian middle class dream.

A major disparity is also seen in the allotted seats for the general category students. The JEE Advanced CUT off for 2018 for SC/ST/OBC& PWD category has been (-)35 whereas the CUT off for general candidate is 74 marks.  So, out of the 2.32 lacs which qualified for JEE Advanced, 1.11 lacs general candidates qualified with 74 marks or higher while the rest 1.2 lac from the reserved category qualified with scores as low as -35.

The education system needs lot of alignment and transformation with respect to all these and more in order to meet quantity while maintaining quality to keep up with industry imperatives and demands.

For students who have not managed to do exceptionally good under these tough and challenging conditions and their concerned parents, we bring a set of recommended colleges beyond the IITs and NITs which offers value based education and has been contributing the nation’s growth.
