Bullet Proof Lifesaving Jackets for the Army, designed by Prof. Shantanu Bhowmick, Amrita University, gets Government nod.
Professor Shantanu Bhowmick, head of research and departmental head of aerospace engineering from Coimbatore's Amrita University has designed the futuristic bullet proof jacket for the jawans of Indian Army. Thermoplastic Carbon Fabric (TCF) technology has been indigenously developed and patented by Dr Bhowmik. The Light Weight High Temperature Thermoplastic Composite can prove to be a game changer for India’s defence and aviation sector as per Dr. Bhowmik. It has 20 layers and the carbon fiber in it will enable the jacket to work in 57 degrees Celsius also. The present bullet proof jackets being used by our jawans in the Army, BSF, CRPF and Police are very heavy, weighing anywhere between 15-18 kgs,
causing a lot of discomfort and leaving the Armed Forces personnel at a disadvantage during an encounters. The new light weight jackets shall weigh 6-8 times less at just 1.5 kg.
This is the first of its kind that an indigenous technology and design will be used in the history of 70 years of the Indian Army. While currently used materia…
