IIM Mumbai: The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in Mumbai will be renamed as the Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai (IIM Mumbai) and will offer MBA programs from 2024. The institute aims to become one of the top three management institutes in India and plans to partner with other institutes for better quality education. The fee structure is expected to increase, but efforts will be made to keep it as low as possible

The Union Cabinet on 12th July cleared an amendment in the legislation governing Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to set up a new institute in Mumbai.
The Amendment has been proposed in the Indian Institute of Management Act , to upgrade the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) in Mumbai into an IIM.
With the clearance of the Amendment by the Cabinet it seems to be a matter of protocol as part of the next session in Parliament for IIM M to have its 2nd Campus as the 21st IIMs of the country.
NITIE was set up by the government of India in 1963 with the help of the United Nations Development Programme and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
Mumbai gets its 2nd IIM – NITIE is now 21st IIM of India
A bill to rename National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, as Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is part of the Centre’s legislative agenda for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament starting commencing today. – July 18th 2022.
National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering (NITIE) Mumbai, is the first Business School of India that is to be rechristened as – IIM.
With this move by the government Mumbai will technically and practically now have 2 IIMs as IIM Indore’s Mumbai campus located at Hiranandani Knowledge Park, Powai, has already been operational in Mumbai, for more than a year with 120 seats.
Are the IIMs unable to attract female students ?
Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM Indore) will also be mentoring the new Mumbai campus.
As of now there were 20 IIMs in India, now NITIE Mumbai shall be the 21st IIM.
NITIE has always been a popular B School and has been ranked 9th among management schools in India, by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. NITIE offers five postgraduate programs in the field of Technology and Management.

The first of its kind move by the centre to rename an already existing and established management institute of the country as Indian Institute of Management have raised questions in the academic fraternity and students community as it is not a new campus facility that is coming up but just an amendment of an already functional institute is being done.
The amendment bill, 2022, seeks for “inclusion of NITIE Mumbai in IIM Act, 2017 and renaming NITIE, Mumbai as IIM Mumbai”.
While one more IIM gets added in the list, essentially there is no increase in the number of new institutes that have come up. The bill is among 24 new bills that have been proposed for “introduction, consideration and passing” during the parliament session.
According to reports, the Ministry of Education, in January this year constituted a committee to deliberate on the feasibility to bring the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai, under the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Act, 2017).
Bombay Stock Exchange’s Chief Executive Officer and Allahabad University Chancellor Ashishkumar Chauhan, was head of the expert committee.
Other members of the committee were Pramod Kumar Jain, Director at IIT BHU; Pawan Kumar Singh, Director at IIM Tiruchirappalli; Dr. Subhasis Choudhuri, Director at IIT, Bombay and Pradeep Goyal, CMD at Pradeep Metals.
