Gender Diversity: A New Era for IIM Mumbai
Last year, under NITIE, only 108 (21%) of the 497 admitted students were female. This year, out of 518 students, 245 (47.1%) are female students, highlighting a substantial shift towards gender balance. This achievement is a result of several strategic initiatives aimed at encouraging more women to apply and succeed in management education.
- For 2023 -25 batch: only 21% of the 497 admitted students were female.
- For 2024 -26 batch: only 47.1% of the 518 admitted students were female.
- For the batch 2024-26: Non-engineers, with 74% of them being female.
Key Factors Contributing to Increased Gender Diversity
- Inclusive Eligibility Criteria: The change from NITIE to IIM Mumbai allowed non-engineers to apply, significantly broadening the applicant pool. As NITIE, the institute offered three courses: Postgraduate Diplomas in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Management and Sustainability Management – all requiring students to have engineering degrees. After gaining the status of IIM in August 2023, the institute is offering MBA degrees — MBA (General), MBA in Sustainability and Management, and MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and admission is not restricted to only engineers. This year, nearly 30% of the admitted students are non-engineers, with 74% of them being female students.
- Increase in number of seats : While the number of seats were increased post rechristening of NITIE to IIM Mumbai, diversity enhancement strategies were implemented through various outreach programs, scholarship opportunities, and mentorship schemes specifically designed to attract and support female applicants.
- Comprehensive Orientation: A two-week orientation program helped integrate students from diverse backgrounds, preparing them for academic and professional challenges.

Impact on Courses and Specializations
The shift to IIM status also brought changes in the offered programs. Previously, NITIE provided postgraduate diplomas requiring an engineering background. Now, IIM Mumbai offers MBA degrees in General Management, Sustainability and Management, and Operations and Supply Chain Management. The MBA (General) program, in particular, has the highest proportion of female students, with 177 out of 315 being women.
