The Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section of the CAT exam is a crucial component that tests a candidate’s mathematical skills, problem-solving abilities, and numerical reasoning. It’s often considered challenging, especially for those who haven’t regularly engaged with mathematics. The syllabus for CAT QA is largely based on topics from Class 9 and 10 mathematics but at an advanced level, requiring a strong conceptual understanding and application skills.

Here’s a detailed exploration of the CAT Quantitative Aptitude ( CAT QA) syllabus, categorized by major areas:
IIM Admission 2027, MBA Placements and PGP Summer Placement
Arithmetic: Arithmetic is consistently the most dominant section in CAT QA, often accounting for 40-50% of the questions. A strong grip on these topics is essential. Percentages, Profit and Loss, Ratio and Proportion, Averages, Mixtures and Alligations, Time, Speed, and Distance (TSD), Time and Work, Simple and Compound Interest (SI & CI):
- Algebra: Algebra is another highly important section, often contributing 30-40% of the QA questions. Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Functions, Inequalities, Logarithms, Progressions (Sequences & Series):
- Geometry & Mensuration: This section typically accounts for 15-20% of the QA questions. Lines and Angles, Triangles, Circles, Quadrilaterals, Polygons, Mensuration (2D & 3D), Coordinate Geometry:
- Number System: The Number System section typically has a lower weightage (5-10%) but is fundamental to understanding other topics. Classifications of Numbers, Divisibility Rules, Factors and Multiples, LCM and HCF, Remainders, Unit’s Digit and Last Two Digits:
- Modern Math: Modern Math typically has a weightage of 5-10% and includes topics like: Permutation and Combination (P&C), Probability, Set Theory and Venn Diagrams, Binomial Theorem (Basic).
CAT QA Preparation tips:
- Arithmetic and Algebra Dominance: These two sections consistently hold the highest weightage. Mastering them should be a top priority.
- Conceptual Clarity: CAT QA questions are not just about formulas; they test your understanding of the underlying concepts and your ability to apply them in varied scenarios.
- Problem-Solving Strategies: Develop efficient strategies for each question type.
- Accuracy over Attempts: With negative marking for MCQs, focusing on accuracy is paramount.
- Mock Tests and Analysis: Regularly taking mock tests and thoroughly analyzing your performance to identify weak areas and improve time management is crucial for the QA section.
- Speed and Calculation: While an on-screen calculator is provided, strong mental math and approximation skills can save valuable time.
