Jio Institute, which has been in the news even before the physical existence of the institute, for some time and also has been recognised as an ‘Institute of Eminence’ by the Government of India, has announced in a release that Dr. Ravichandran will join Jio Institute as its founding Provost and Professor of Engineering on July 1, 2022.
Prof. Guruswami Ravichandran who is from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) will join the institute as the Provost to further strengthen its academic leadership, said the release. Prof. Guruswami served as the Otis Booth Leadership Chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at Caltech from 2015 to 2021 and served as the Director of the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at California Institute of Technology (GALCIT) from 2009 to 2015.
The campus of the Jio Institute is located at Navi Mumbai at the outskirts of Mumbai on an 800 acre land with supposedly state-of-the-art infrastructure. According to the Reliance Foundation an estimated Rs. 1500 Crore (i.e 225 USD) is to be spent towards setting up of the university. So far, the Jio Institute has tied up with renowned global educational institutions—such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Stanford University, and Nanyang Technological University—to bring onboard experts for various subjects.
Jio Institute has also announced admissions to its Post-Graduate (PG) Certificate Programmes in the emerging areas of Artificial Intelligence & Data Science and Digital Media & Marketing Communications.
These one-year full-time programmes will be delivered by leading academicians from globally reputed universities and industry thought leaders which will be offered from Jio Institute’s campus at Navi Mumbai.
Both the programmes require the candidate to have a minimum of 50% or equivalent CGPA in a bachelor’s degree and after that work experience of at least eighteen months.
Scholarships of up to 100% on the tuition fees for deserving candidates is on the offer.
The university earlier appointed renowned Indian scientist, RA Mashelkar as its chancellor. Mashelkar—who has been awarded a Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India—has been a member of RIL’s board for several years. A chemical engineer by education, Mashelkar also heads the National Innovation Foundation under the Indian government’s department of science and technology.
Jio Institute an Institute of Eminence
In 2018, GOI awarded Jio Institute the tag of “Institute of Eminence,” (IoE) which is usually given to colleges that offer interdisciplinary courses, conduct research in areas of emerging technology, and have a mix of domestic and international students and faculty with student amenities comparable with that of internationally reputed institutions, the likes of – Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Shiv Nadar, BITS Pilani, OP Jindal, Manipal etc. All other institutes existed and are running from the past many years while the Jio institute was just on paper, when it was tagged IoE. The IoE institutes shall enjoy freedom from regulators and are allowed greater autonomy. Public institutes under the IoE category are eligible to apply for funds from the central government. Tagging of the Jio Institute, which did not even exist at that point of time, and recognising it as IoE along with other reputed institutes, raised a lot of questions about the selection criteria of IoE by the Government.
Smt. Nita Ambani, Founder Chairperson, Reliance Foundation, reportedly said, “It gives me pleasure to welcome Dr. Ravichandran in the Jio Institute and Reliance family. I am sure we all will immensely benefit from his vast experience in academia and that he will accelerate our mission of preparing the next generation of global leaders, who can contribute to the advancement of India and the world. With faculty drawn from top-notch institutions across the world, Jio Institute is envisioned to be global while retaining its Indian essence.”
Presently, Jio Institute is not running any courses but conducting workshops related to its proposed programmes. Last year, the university hosted workshop on data science in association with MIT.
