Jio Institute an Institute of Eminence
In 2018, GOI awarded Jio Institute the tag of “Institute of Eminence,” (IoE) which is usually given to colleges that offer interdisciplinary courses, conduct research in areas of emerging technology, and have a mix of domestic and international students and faculty with student amenities comparable with that of internationally reputed institutions, the likes of – Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Shiv Nadar, BITS Pilani, OP Jindal, Manipal etc. All other institutes existed and are running from the past many years while the Jio institute was just on paper, when it was tagged IoE. The IoE institutes shall enjoy freedom from regulators and are allowed greater autonomy. Public institutes under the IoE category are eligible to apply for funds from the central government. Tagging of the Jio Institute, which did not even exist at that point of time, and recognising it as IoE along with other reputed institutes, raised a lot of questions about the selection criteria of IoE by the Government.
Smt. Nita Ambani, Founder Chairperson, Reliance Foundation, reportedly said, “It gives me pleasure to welcome Dr. Ravichandran in the Jio Institute and Reliance family. I am sure we all will immensely benefit from his vast experience in academia and that he will accelerate our mission of preparing the next generation of global leaders, who can contribute to the advancement of India and the world. With faculty drawn from top-notch institutions across the world, Jio Institute is envisioned to be global while retaining its Indian essence.”
Presently, Jio Institute is not running any courses but conducting workshops related to its proposed programmes. Last year, the university hosted workshop on data science in association with MIT.
