JEE Advanced 2023: The Telangana Police have nabbed five students for allegedly cheating in JEE Advanced through a WhatsApp group during the examination Sunday. The cheating came to light after one of them was caught with a phone at an exam centre by an invigilator.

JEE Advance exam is the entrance test that determines admissions for aspiring students to the premier Indian Institutes of Technology.
The students, who are minors, were issued a notice under Section 41 CrPC seeking their cooperation in further investigation, a police officer said. They were also booked under Sections 188 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Section 8 of the Telangana Public Examination (Prevention of Malpractice and Unfair Means) Act.
According to the police, all five candidates are friends and related and took JEE Advanced coaching from a private institute in Madhapur.

On Sunday, as the exam was in progress, one of the invigilators at the iON Digital Zone exam centre in Mallapur caught a candidate with a cell phone. On probing his phone, officials came across a WhatsApp group and alerted the police as well as exam authorities.

As these students were caught from different exam centres, four separate FIRs were registered at the police stations in the Market area, Malkajgiri, Nacharam, and L B Nagar.

An officer from Nacharam police station told indianexpress.com two brothers, residents of Kukatpally, were giving the exam at centres 1 and 2 in Mallapur, and were caught at 9.30 am, half an hour after the exam began.
“One of them, a 17-year-old, clicked a photo of a question and shared it on their WhatsApp group asking for the answer. After he was caught by the invigilators, his brother, an 18-year-old and a member of the WhatsApp group, was also found to be carrying a mobile phone,” said the officer, adding that at least 600 students wrote the exam at these two centres on Sunday.

Subsequently, two more members of the same WhatsApp group were caught with mobile phones at the exam centres in the jurisdiction of L B Nagar and Malkajgiri police stations based on information shared by officials.
The boys confessed to committing the offence and the investigation is in progress, the police said. They also told the police this was the first time they resorted to malpractice in an exam.
