September 17, 2026: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released its QS Global Full-Time MBA Rankings 2027, covering more than 420 MBA programmes across 65 countries and the headline story is a changing of the guard at the very top. MIT Sloan School of Management has claimed the world No. 1 spot for the first time in its history, climbing from third place last year and pushing Penn’s Wharton School out of the top spot it held in the 2026 edition.

For India, though, the story is more sobering. All three Indian Institutes of Management that feature in the global top 100 IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, and IIM Calcutta have dropped in rank compared to QS 2026, even as India’s overall footprint in the ranking has never been larger.

US schools swept the first four positions outright, with UK and French institutions rounding out the rest of the top 10, a familiar pattern for QS’s MBA table, though the order at the very top has shifted meaningfully with MIT Sloan’s rise.
IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta: How Far Did They Fall?
| Colleges | 2027 Rank | 2026 Rank | Year-on-Year
Change |
| IIM Bangalore | 64 | 52 | Down 12 places |
| IIM Ahmedabad | 70 | 58 | Down 12 places |
| IIM Calcutta | 95 | 64 | Down 31 places |
IIM Bangalore remains India’s highest-ranked MBA programme for the fourth consecutive year, and holds on to 2nd place across Asia for Employability but its global rank fell from 52nd to 64th. IIM Ahmedabad dropped an identical 12 places, from 58th to 70th, though it remains the only Indian institute inside the global top 100 for Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes, placing 84th on that specific metric. IIM Calcutta recorded the sharpest fall of the three, sliding 31 places from 64th to 95th which is the steepest decline among India’s top-tier B-schools this year.
IMT Ghaziabad Re-enters FT MiM Ranking at #86
QS attributed the across-the-board slide to intensifying global competition on metrics including Return on Investment (ROI), Entrepreneurship & Alumni Outcomes, and Diversity areas where international programmes appear to be closing the gap on India’s established leaders.

India’s Wider Footprint Keeps Growing, Even as the Leaders Slip
The drop at the top doesn’t tell the whole story. India’s presence in the QS Global MBA table has expanded sharply: 19 Indian institutions feature in the 2027 full-time MBA list, up from just 7 in 2022 and 5 in 2020. Combined with specialised Business Master’s programmes, India now places 28 institutions on QS’s global list making it the 4th most represented nation, behind only the US, UK, and France.
IIM Kozhikode Rises 15 Places to #54 Globally in FT MIM Rankings 2026
Notable new entrants this year include:
- O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) : India’s highest-ranked new entrant, debuting in the 171–180 band.
- Woxsen School of Business : landing in the 251–300 bracket, and posting Asia’s best Diversity score among Indian schools at 33rd globally.
- Jaipuria Institute of Management, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Manav Rachna International Institute, and Vikrant University Gwalior – all debuting in the 301+ band.
Where India Stands in Asia
Regionally, National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School retained its position as Asia’s top-ranked MBA provider at 23rd globally, followed by Tsinghua University at 29th and Singapore Management University (SMU) at 41st. IIM Bangalore and IIM Ahmedabad placed 8th and 9th in Asia respectively, even as their global standing eased back.
Beyond the Full-Time MBA: How IIMs Fared in Business Master’s Rankings
QS’s companion Business Master’s rankings covering Management, Business Analytics, Finance, Marketing, and Supply Chain also placed Indian programmes competitively. IIM Bangalore ranked 31st globally for Master’s in Management and 60th for Business Analytics; IIM Ahmedabad placed 46th in Management; and IIM Calcutta came in at 57th for Management and 96th for Business Analytics.
A Different Picture on Other Rankings
It’s worth noting that rankings methodology matters. On the separately released Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2027, several Asian and Indian programmes including CEIBS, Nanyang, ISB, and Peking University placed ahead of where IIM Bangalore sits on the QS table, a reminder that different ranking bodies weight employability, salary uplift, and research output differently, and no single list tells the complete story of a programme’s strength.
