The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD or IIT Delhi) is launching a new four-year undergraduate programme, ‘B Tech in Design,’ starting from the academic year 2025-26.
Admission to this programme will be conducted by the Department of Design at IIT Delhi and will be based on JEE Advanced rankings.
Students enrolled in the B Tech in Design programme will study current technologies, systematic design thinking processes, research methods for analysing socio-technical systems, communication and presentation skills, and teamwork.
This is a transdisciplinary programme that combines the strengths of technology and design. It promotes a unique blend of learning processes, integrating systematic discovery and understanding, as found in engineering education, with the exploration of individualistic and creative leaps, characteristic of design education.
IIT Delhi has numerous departments/centres/schools specialising in science, engineering, management, humanities, social sciences, and policy. Being a part of this larger ecosystem, this programme in Design and its curricula is expected to harness the existing strengths of the Institute as well.
“Our expectation is that after graduating from IIT Delhi with a BTech in Design degree, the students will take up, in the long run, leadership positions in industry, academia, government, consulting, and entrepreneurship. The programme offers enough choices and freedom for students to exercise diverse career paths,” said Professor Jyoti Kumar, HoD, Department of Design.
“As the proposed curriculum is broad-based and analogous to existing programmes offered by IIT Delhi. The approach of the Institute would be to create new leaders in design who can see the big picture as generalists and have the ability to go into details as a design specialist does,” Professor Kumar said in a media report.
About the programme: The programme would offer courses, with about half of the courses belonging to the core discipline of design and the rest coming from other departments, centres, and schools (similar to the other BTech programmes). The B Tech in Design programme at IIT Delhi will emphasise product design, aiming to prepare students to confidently use design as a tool to address problems in industry and society by the end of the programme.
