Let’s take a data-driven dive into placement trends across some of the premier IITs over the past few years and see where things stand in 2024.
Setting the context : Media reports based on a RTI application filed by IIT Kanpur alumnus, stated that around 38 percent of students across 23 IITs remain unplaced so far this year. The report was published by the Times of India (TOI), later followed by HT and other leading media houses.

“Over 7,000 IIT students are yet to be placed via campus this year across all the 23 IITs. Two years ago, this unplaced number was half at 3,400. While the number of students sitting in placements has gone up 1.2 times, the number of unplaced students has doubled to 2.3 times in two years,” the report quoted.

While the RTI data may have shed light on the number of unplaced students, this statistic naturally prompts the following question:
- How many seats were increased in each of these IITs last year ?
- Does it talk about UG students or overall students – PG and PhDs included ?
- How many seats were vacant this year ?
In 2022 we reported that the total number of seats offered at IITs were 16,598. This went up to 17385 in 2023 for IITs according to JOSAA. Which is around a 5% increase in seats. Current year data on the exact number of seats is not clear yet. However, the report in TOI says 21,500 students registered for placements.
Interestingly, over 10,000 seats across IITs remained vacant in 2020-22 years. And 8,700 were vacant in NITs.
- 5,296 seats vacant in 2021-22
- 5,484 seats vacant in 2020-21

However, the current placement season (2023-24) seems to be building on the previous year’s momentum. Here are some early indications:
- IIT Madras: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras, or IIT M) reported an increase of 19% in internship offers received on day one of campus internship drive for students of the 2023-24 batch. A total of 19 international internship offers were received from seven companies. - IIT Kanpur: This year’s Placement Season for Indian Institute Of Technology, Kanpur started quite remarkably with 485 job offers (including PPOs) getting extended to 428 students on Day 1 of Placement. Notably, 12 students received international jobs.
Looking Ahead : Considering the past data and the current trends above, it’s too early to say whether the IITs are “far from the glorified times”, or the placement season is going to be gloomy or whether the “crore-plus club” will add more members.
Dear students, you give your best shot and let the placement departments do their jobs.
