IIT Kharagpur clarified that the directive was just a “ guideline” and doesn’t fall under mandatory requisites. The statement issued by IIT Kharagpur also added that the mailer issued to the students regarding the convocation attire was mentioned explicitly due to the theme of the 69th Convocation so that it becomes easier for the students to comprehend and does not fall under mandatory requisites.

For the convocation, IIT Kharagpur most likely will be inviting Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar to grace the event with his presence as a guest of honor All students graduating in the session 2022-23 are eligible to be awarded the degrees at the Convocation either in person or in absentia.
Attendance to this Convocation is only to be secured through Registration in the Institute Official website. Registration for participation, attendance in the rehearsal and the dress code are mandatory, failing which no degree recipient will be permitted to attend the Convocation.

The Guidelines to attend the “Prestigious Convocation” always comes with a “Dress Code” which all the students are to abide by but this year’s dress code has sparked resistance from a section of institutes’s alumni , students and academics. They feel such dress code curbs “ personal freedom and choice”.

The guideline stated that boys should wear full -sleeved knee length plain, solid, white Cotton Kurta with a Mandarin collar with a white fitted cotton churidar/ pyjama. For the girls it is plain solid white cotton saree with a plain narrow golden zari border and a plain pallu with solid white cotton blouse with sleeves. In fact the guideline also puts a curb on the type of jewellery, shoes to be worn and the style in which the saree to be draped.
Many feels , since all students are not from the same Social and Cultural background these diktats often lead to inferiority complex and are termed as “Regressive”. Dress code should be laid out in such a manner so that it specifies that the students are dressed according to the occasion.
