MHRD letter stating that premier B-schools can’t offer 1 year post graduate degree programmes as per the UGC regulations poses a threat to te IIM’s which offer One Year MBA Programme.
A tussle emerged between the government and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) over the MHRD order to stop offering one year post graduate degree programmes.
Offered by some of the older IIMs, the one year PG programmes are primarily meant for working professionals who may not have a MBA degree.
The 1 year program which used to be offered as diplomas initially, were later granted degree status by these IIMs by the virtue of their autonomy.
Presently 1 Year MBA is offered by IIMs –
- IIM Calcutta – MBAEx program
- IIM A & B – MBA programs
- IIM Lucknow – MBA programme called International Programme in Management for Executives (IPMX) at its Noida campus
- IIM Indore & IIM Kozhikode – MBA EPGP
- • Many other colleges across the country offers 15 month executive Management programmes
- • Few IIMs offers 2 year executive program like IIM L, IIM K, IIM Trichy, IIM V
These programmes are great options for executives and middle level managers who may not have a formal management degree/diploma, to enhance and upgrade their managerial skill sets required for next level roles.
MHRD had written to IIMs stating that the B-schools cannot offer one year post graduate degree programmes as UGC regulations do not allow such a practice. The advisory to IIMs was based on an opinion given to MHRD by the law ministry. The IIMs are looking forward to taking the matter up with MHRD hoping for a favourable outcome.
Possible solutions, could be most likely to go back to offering the diploma instead of an 1 year Degree which is not permitted as per UGC regulations component of research after completion of one year are on the cards.
The 15 months executive programmes offered by private B Schools are however approved by AICTE and do not fall under this category.
