The latest data from the State health department reveals that currently, Telangana has the highest MBBS seat-to-population ratio. In the State, 19 MBBS seats are available for a population of one lakh. Regarding this ratio, Karnataka comes in the second position as there are 17 seats available per lakh population.
However, considering the increase of seats an academic in the State expressed concern regarding the quality of medical students and added, “Last year also, Telangana saw a steep rise in new seats, leading to drastic cut-off variation with other states. For instance in AP, the last student to qualify NEET scored 530 marks out of 720, but in state a student who scored 80 marks less, 449 on 720, also qualified.”
