The Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur (IIM Sambalpur) reached a new milestone in terms of gender diversity at its 9th annual convocation when women made up 60% of the graduating MBA class—an IIM first. A total of 370 students graduated from five different programmes for the first time in the history of the institute in a single convocation ceremony.

IIM Sambalpur launches dual degree MBA programme in Business Analytics
Girish Mohan Gupta of Sambalpur is made up of special grey matter. At an age when people enter the prime of retired life, the 84-year-old has just got no chill, literally. He has bagged an MBA degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management at Sambalpur (IIM Sambalpur) recently, and already on for his next pursuit of earning a PhD in management.
The graduating class consisted of 316 students of the ninth MBA batch (2023–25), 38 students of the second Executive MBA batch (2022–24), 10 students of the first MBA for Working Professionals batch [Executive MBA] (2023–25), in addition to six PhD scholars and a few PhD students for working professionals. The ceremony honoured academic achievements, and awards comprised the Chairman’s Gold Medals for the best performers across programmes. One of the highlights included 80-year-old entrepreneur GM Gupta graduating from the MBA for Working Professionals programme.

Dr Pramod Kumar Mishra, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, was the guest of honour. He appreciated IIM Sambalpur’s forward-thinking gender balance and praised its embrace of artificial intelligence in learning, as well as its innovative Master Weavers program that empowers local artisans of Western Odisha. Exhorting graduates to be change-makers, he added: “The future will not simply be inherited—it will be created.”
Padma Shri Arundhati Bhattacharya, the Chairperson of the IIM Sambalpur Board of Governors and the CEO of Salesforce India & South Asia, urged students to live each day with grit and determination for self-betterment. “Rise every morning with the commitment to be a better version of yourself today than you were yesterday. That is the measure of success,” she said.

Delivering the welcome address, Director Prof. Dr. Mahadeo Jaiswal highlighted the institute’s achievements in the last decade. “This convocation celebrates ten years of IIM Sambalpur. For the first time ever, women exceed men among graduates at any IIM—a heartening transition to higher education in India,” he added. He also spoke of the institution’s journey towards triple accreditation (AACSB, EFMD, and BGA), which would put it in a select group of world-class Indian business schools.
Despite economic uncertainties, the 2023–25 MBA batch attracted over 250 companies during placements, with the highest domestic offer at Rs. 31.12 LPA and the top international package at Rs. 35 LPA. Leading recruiters included PwC, Accenture, Infosys Consulting, Tata Capital, Deloitte, and Cognizant. As per Media Report
