CAT 2018 registration has been closed for this year after the extension of dates. Number of aspirants reported to have filled the form has been around 2.41 lac, which is higher by 3% (approximately by 10,000 in nos.) compared to past year. Incidentally, this is has highest in the past 10 years. In 2008 no. of aspirants in CAT were 2.9 lacs.

While there has been not much of rise in CAT registrations as per the past 5 years trends increase in the seats in IIMs has been almost a whopping 50%.
For the batch 2014-16 no. of CAT aspirants were 1.94 lac and combined seats at 13 IIMs were around 3000, while for the batch 2019-21, 4500 seats are at the offering by 20 IIMs.
Apart from the top 4 IIMs – A, B, C & L and few of the young IIMs, is other IIMs losing the sheen and is not able to match with the reputation and brand equity?
Fact:
- Out of 20 IIMs, this year only 10 has its own permanent campus, rest are running in temporary campuses and shared infrastructures.
- While IIM Shillong came out with it’s campus this year, Rohtak, Ranchi and Raipur among the 2nd generation IIMs, are yet to have own campus after 9 years of operation.
- While 2nd gen IIMs Raipur ( 12.45 LPA for the batch 20161-18 & 13.1 LPA for the batch 2015-17) and Kashipur (12.19 LPA for the batch 2016-18 & 13.19 LPA for the batch 2015-17) average placement performance went down the placement data of few of the 3rd generation IIMs – Amritsar, Nagpur and Visakhapatnam went up.
