Hyderabad, August 19, 2026: Can mathematics be understood through dance? Can scientific concepts be communicated through rhythm, movement and choreography?

The Dr. K. V. Rao Scientific Society (KVRSS) recently explored these questions through an innovative presentation titled “Math Meets Movement” at its 26th Annual Day celebrations held at the University of Hyderabad.

The unique experiment brought together Science, Mathematics and Dance, demonstrating how artistic expression can help make abstract scientific and mathematical concepts more visual, intuitive and engaging.

KVRSS, a Hyderabad-based non-profit organisation that has completed 26 years, is dedicated to fostering scientific inquiry and recognising young talent at the school, college and university levels. Over the years, it has evolved into a national platform encouraging curiosity, innovation and excellence in science.

For more than two decades, the Society has been working to make science learning engaging, enjoyable and memorable. Rather than treating science merely as a subject to be memorised, KVRSS encourages students to experience, visualise, question and explore scientific concepts through creative learning.

Taking this idea a step further, KVRSS decided to explore a new question: Can Mathematics be expressed through Dance?

To develop the concept, the Society approached Prof. J. Anuradha, Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and a distinguished Kuchipudi exponent. Her encouragement and support helped take the idea forward.

KVRSS subsequently collaborated with Ms. P. B. Vaishnavi, Assistant Professor of Dance, GITAM, Hyderabad, who, along with her team, translated mathematical ideas into movement, rhythm and choreography.

The result was “Math Meets Movement,” an innovative dance presentation performed during the Society’s 26th Annual Day celebrations at the School of Life Sciences Auditorium, University of Hyderabad, Gachibowli.

Through the language of dance, the presentation creatively explored mathematical ideas such as symmetry, geometry, patterns, sequences, rhythm and spatial relationships.

The performance demonstrated that Science and Art need not exist in separate worlds. They can complement each other and offer different ways of understanding the same ideas. Concepts that may appear abstract on a classroom blackboard can become more intuitive and memorable when visualised through movement and artistic expression.

The initiative also reflects KVRSS’s long-standing belief that curiosity and creativity can go hand in hand in science education. By bringing art into STEM learning, the Society hopes to encourage students to move beyond rote learning and discover science through observation, imagination, experimentation and expression.

“Math Meets Movement” represents another experiment in KVRSS’s continuing journey to make science learning experiential, interdisciplinary, engaging and accessible to young minds.

Established in 2001 in memory of Dr. K. V. Rao, a distinguished scientist of the Geological Survey of India and a strong advocate of multidisciplinary research, the Dr. K. V. Rao Scientific Society has spent the last 26 years nurturing scientific temper and promoting STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics — among students ranging from school children to young researchers below the age of 30.

Its programmes promote hands-on learning through experiments, scientific games, stories, models, innovation challenges and creative arts, encouraging young people to discover the joy of science.

Beyond its awards and competitions, KVRSS has also taken hands-on science education directly to students through its Science Innovation Centre and Mobile Science Lab, launched during 2021–22. Together, these initiatives have benefited more than 23,000 students in just four years. Submitted by Solus Media
