Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, informed Gujarat high court on Monday that it might introduce the reservation policy in its PhD programme from the 2025 academic year. After resisting quota in doctoral courses for a few years, the institute agreed for it in response to a PIL filed by the Global IIM Alumni Network. During the hearing on Monday, the petitioner submitted that the IIM, Ahmedabad affidavit only mentioned that reservation would be introduced, and insisted that the institute should elaborate on when it intended to do that.
The submission came in relation to a public interest litigation (PIL) moved in 2021 by Anil Wagde, a member of the Global IIM Alumni Network — an association of IIM graduates — seeking implementation of reservation in IIMA’s PhD programmes.
The petitioner’s advocate Bhadrish Raju insisted Monday that the PIL can be disposed of if the institute makes a statement as to when it would implement the reservation. However, IIMA’s counsel informed a division bench of Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee orally, “My instructions are, in all probability, it may be implemented from academic year 2025”.
CJ Agarwal, addressing the petitioner’s counsel, however remarked that the court “cannot mandate for starting the programme from a particular academic year”.
