We have reported this in Jan 2023 about the possibilities of having global campuses in India. It seems to be a reality now as in a major leap forward for Indian higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the green light to five top international universities to set up campuses right here in India. The development is rooted in the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promises to open doors for thousands of students who dream of a global education, without the financial and logistical hurdles of moving abroad.
The five prestigious foreign universities that have been approved to set up campuses in India between 2026 and 2027:
- Illinois Institute of Technology (USA)- Ranked 601-610 in QS World Rankings, IIT is a leader in science, technology, and engineering that aims to bring American innovation and academic rigor to Indian students who want a tech-focused education.
- University of Liverpool (UK)- Ranked globally 165th as per QS Rankings, it is known for its strong research culture and deep academic roots.
- Victoria University (Australia)– Ranked 741-750 in the QS Rankings and with its hands-on learning and close ties to industry, Victoria University is all about real-world skills and employability.
- Western Sydney University (Australia)– Ranked 384th globally, it is known for its strong programs in research and technology and wants to open a campus in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
- Istituto Europeo di Design (Italy)– Ranked among the top 200 globally in Art and Design, IED is a dream come true. IED plans to bring its Italian expertise in fashion, visual arts, and communication to India.
What This Means for Indian Students:
- Degrees from a foreign University without having to spend enormous amounts in travel and logistics : Studying abroad is expensive, and not just in terms of tuition, but flights, visas, housing, and more. These campuses offer the same degrees at a fraction of the cost.
- No Compromises on Quality: These are the same institutions, with the same standards, faculty, and curriculum except the fact the campus shall be in India.
- Opportunities for All: This isn’t just for big metros. These new campuses can help bridge the gap for students from smaller towns who may not have had the means to go abroad.
- India as a Knowledge Hub: With foreign universities planting roots here, India is stepping up as a serious player in the global education game.
UGCs Guidelines for Foreign Universities: –
The UGC’s 2023 regulations provide a structured framework for foreign universities to establish campuses in India, ensuring quality and compliance with Indian educational standards. Key highlights of these guidelines are-
