UGC has discontinued MPhil degree. Students have been asked not to take admissions in it anymore.The Commission has directed the students not to take admission in M.Phil degree as it is not a recognised degree anymore. New Regulations for ‘Deemed to Be Universities’: Light, But Tight
The discontinuation of MPhil was announced by the UGC to align with NEP. The NEP advocates four-year Bachelor’s degree and research-intensive Master’s degree. “There may be an integrated five-year Bachelor’s/Master’s programme. Undertaking a PhD shall require either a degree or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree with Research. The MPhil programme will be discontinued,” the NEP had specified.
“It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for the M.Phil (master of Philosophy) program. In This regard, it is to bring to the notice that the M.Phil degree is not a recognized degree. The Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D degree) Regulations 2022 clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil program”, read the official notice.
The commission has asked the universities to take immediate steps to stop admissions to any such MPhil programme for the 2023-24 academic year and the students are advised not to take admission in any M.Phil Programme.
Universities to launch 4 year Undergraduate Courses from New Session
There is no clarity issued so far on the status of M.Phil degrees of students who had been awarded already. The exact date from which M.Phil stands to be invalid has not been mentioned.
