Kozhikode, September 02, 2026: The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM Kozhikode) will host the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri V. D. Satheesan, and the Council of Ministers of the Government of Kerala for a two-day residential strategic leadership retreat, ‘Reimagining Keralam’, on September 4 and 5, 2026, at the IIM Kozhikode campus.

Conceptualised as a strategic leadership dialogue, the retreat has been envisioned by IIM Kozhikode Director, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, following his meeting with the Honourable Chief Minister. The programme brings together Kerala’s political leadership, senior faculty of IIM Kozhikode and distinguished international scholars for a focused and forward-looking dialogue on the State’s long-term development trajectory.

The sessions will draw on contemporary management thought, academic research and international perspectives, with a strong emphasis on translating ideas into meaningful outcomes.

IIM Amritsar Hosts Talk on “Indo-German Relations: Way Ahead”
This will be the second occasion that IIM Kozhikode hosts the Kerala State Cabinet for a dedicated leadership programme. The Institute had earlier hosted the Kerala Cabinet in 2011, when the then Council of Ministers, led by the late Shri Oommen Chandy, participated in a day-long leadership and management programme at IIM Kozhikode.
The forthcoming retreat carries an added institutional significance as Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, now serving his third term as Director of IIM Kozhikode, was also at the helm of the Institute in 2011. The 2026 retreat thus represents a continuation of IIM Kozhikode’s engagement with Kerala’s political leadership, bringing together the Institute’s institutional experience, contemporary management scholarship and a renewed focus on shaping the State’s future.
IIM Kozhikode faculty, led by the Director, will join hands with external experts from Keio University, Japan, and King’s College London to deliver sessions across a diverse range of themes. A special session on healthcare and wellness will be led by Dr. Aravind Srinivasan, Chief Medical Officer and Director – Projects, Aravind Eye Care System.
Sharing further details on the preparation and intent behind the retreat, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIM Kozhikode, said:
“The primary objective of the retreat is to create a shared space for strategic reflection — to help the State’s leadership step back from the demands of day-to-day administration and consider, together, the larger forces shaping Kerala’s future. It is a forward-looking engagement in foresight and vision, not a course of remedial instruction. The programme is built on the recognition that Kerala, like every advanced society, now faces a convergence of profound challenges: an ageing population, the disruptions of artificial intelligence, climate vulnerability, shifting patterns of migration and remittances, and growing fiscal pressures. Anticipating these shifts, and governing wisely through them, calls for perspective, evidence and shared strategic thinking.

Over the two days, the sessions will span a deliberately broad canvas: transformational leadership in the age of artificial intelligence; the behavioural science of translating policy into lasting change on the ground; climate resilience and community-based disaster preparedness, drawing on international experience; public health, ageing and the emerging “silver economy”; the renewal of Kerala’s economic and fiscal foundations; employment, entrepreneurship and skills in a time of technological disruption; excellence in higher education; and the positioning of Kerala as a compelling global brand. The themes have been designed by IIMK drawing on its research and executive-education expertise, and in keeping with the development priorities the State itself has articulated.

The retreat is structured as a series of dialogues and reflective conversations among peers, rather than as a classroom programme or an assessment. There is no examination or evaluation of individual participants; the value of the programme lies in candid, collective deliberation and the exchange of perspective between practitioners and scholars.

Through this engagement, IIMK hopes participants will carry forward a sharper sense of the long-term forces shaping the State, a shared strategic vocabulary with which to approach them, and an evidence-informed, behaviourally aware approach to converting policy intent into durable outcomes. The programme is intended to stimulate strategic reflection and a common vision; any documentation of the deliberations, or continuation of the engagement thereafter, will be taken forward as mutually agreed between the Government and the Institute.

Through ‘Reimagining Keralam’, IIM Kozhikode seeks to create a rigorous and action-oriented platform for reflection, dialogue and strategic thinking, enabling Kerala’s leadership to look beyond immediate priorities and consider the larger forces that will shape the State’s next chapter.
