IIM Calcutta appointed Dr. Sahadeb Sarkar, professor in operations management group, as director-in-charge of the institute after accepting the resignation of Dr. Uttam Kumar Sarkar as director with immediate effect.

IIM Calcutta’s Director resigns over interferences and stalled projects
The decision was taken in a Board of Governors meeting at IIM C and Dr. Sahadeb Sarkar’s appointment in accordance with the provisions of the IIM Act 2017 was initiated with immediate effect. The Board also appreciated Dr Uttam Kumar Sarkar for his valuable contribution as the Director of IIM Calcutta and wished him luck in all his future endeavours.
After the sudden exit of Dr. Anju Seth who made it through the glass ceiling as the only female Director in the history of IIMs, Dr Uttam Sarkar was appointed as Director in August 2021, who tendered his resignation three years ahead of the end of his tenure.
This is the second consecutive time the Institute saw the serving Director resign much before the end of 
the term.
Apparently both Dr Seth and Sarkar were not too comfortable with the interference of the board and is believed to be the reason for their early exits.
Dr. Sahadeb Sarkar has a PhD in statistics from Iowa State University, USA. He joined the Operations Management group of IIM Calcutta in 1997. Before that, he was an associate professor with tenure at Oklahoma State University, USA. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, USA.
Dr Uttam Kumar Sarkar will continue as a professor in the management information systems (MIS) group of the institute, as directed by the Board of Governors.
